Alican Uludag, a correspondent for Deutsche Welle, was released after spending 25 hours in police custody. His detention came on charges of inciting hatred and spreading misinformation, just two months after he was released pending trial for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This pattern of arrests highlights ongoing issues regarding press freedom in Turkey, as many journalists face similar threats.

The German government expressed irritation over Uludag’s renewed detention, emphasizing Turkey’s obligations to uphold press freedom as a member of the Council of Europe. DW’s Director General called for his rights to be respected and a fair trial to be ensured. The case has drawn criticism from Turkish press organizations, which gathered in protest, asserting that journalism should not be criminalized.

Uludag’s release comes with conditions, including a warning not to leave Turkey and mandatory police check-ins four times a week. This situation reflects a broader climate of fear among journalists in Turkey, where many are imprisoned or under investigation for their work. Activists argue that such actions stifle free expression and hinder the ability to report critically on government actions.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by journalists in Turkey, where press freedom is increasingly under threat. As Uludag continues to deny the charges against him, the international community watches closely, hoping for a shift towards greater protection for media professionals in the country.
