E-bike and E-scooter Fires: A Growing Danger in the UK

Recent data reveals that fires caused by e-bikes and e-scooters have resulted in 18 fatalities and nearly 700 injuries across the UK. The alarming rise in incidents, from 32 fires in 2019 to 605 in 2025, highlights a significant public safety risk, particularly in urban areas where many of these fires occur. The London Fire Brigade has expressed increasing concern over the dangers posed by these vehicles, especially those that are second-hand or modified with unregulated parts.

The rapid spread of fires can lead to devastating consequences, as seen in personal accounts where families were trapped in their homes due to toxic smoke and flames. Experts warn that lithium-ion batteries, while efficient, can become hazardous if faulty or improperly maintained, releasing flames and toxic fumes that can engulf a room within seconds. This has raised urgent calls for better public awareness regarding the safe use and storage of these devices.

The government’s “Buy Safe, Be Safe” campaign stresses the importance of purchasing e-bikes and e-scooters that meet safety standards, yet many consumers remain unaware of the risks associated with non-compliant batteries. With the average cost of new e-bikes ranging from £400 to £4,000, cheaper second-hand options might not adhere to safety regulations, posing a further risk to users.

Coroners have issued multiple warnings about the life-threatening dangers of lithium-ion batteries, urging the public to understand the serious implications of having such devices in their homes. As the popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters continues to grow, so too does the need for heightened safety measures and consumer education to prevent further tragedies.
