The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now spread to two additional health zones, bringing the total to 60 areas affected. This rapid expansion highlights the outbreak’s unprecedented speed, with a staggering case fatality rate of 48% overall, and even higher in specific regions like North Kivu, where it reaches nearly 69%.
The situation is exacerbated by a combination of factors, including insecurity, health worker strikes, and significant population movements. As the outbreak continues to spread, the World Health Organization has warned that it remains out of control, potentially surpassing the devastating 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa.
In response, Doctors Without Borders has opened a new treatment centre in Beni, aiming to enhance patient care and contact tracing. Meanwhile, vaccination efforts have begun for health workers using the Ervebo vaccine, although a specific vaccine for the Bundibugyo virus causing this outbreak is still under development.
The implications of this outbreak extend beyond health, disrupting daily life and public gatherings in affected provinces. With the risk of cross-border transmission to neighbouring countries, the situation calls for urgent international attention and support to contain the virus and protect vulnerable communities.
