Eid al-Adha in Gaza: A Celebration Marked by Loss and Scarcity

As Palestinians in Gaza prepare for Eid al-Adha, the celebration is overshadowed by ongoing conflict and severe shortages. This year marks the third Eid under war-like conditions, with many families unable to afford traditional practices such as animal sacrifice due to skyrocketing prices and a lack of livestock. The absence of these customs highlights the profound impact of the Israeli siege and military actions on daily life in Gaza.

For families like I’tidal Hamdan’s, the emotional toll is immense. Hamdan, who lost her husband and several family members in the conflict, had hoped to perform Hajj this year, a dream now indefinitely postponed. The restrictions on movement and the destruction of homes have left many displaced and struggling to meet even basic needs, let alone celebrate.

The cost of livestock has surged dramatically, with prices rising from hundreds to thousands of dollars, making it unaffordable for most families. This financial strain means that many will not partake in the communal feasting that typically characterises the holiday, further deepening the sense of loss and hardship.

As Eid approaches, the stark reality for Gazans is a poignant reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The absence of joy and traditional rituals during this significant time underscores the broader implications of the conflict, affecting not just immediate celebrations but the very fabric of community life in Gaza.
