New Electric Bike Regulations Could Transform Road Safety

The rise in electric bike usage has prompted calls for stricter regulations in the UK, as recent data reveals a staggering 83% increase in police seizures of illegal e-bikes. In just one year, over 7,000 electric bikes were confiscated, raising concerns about road safety and the potential dangers posed by unregulated vehicles.

Experts warn that many of these bikes exceed legal limits, which classify them as mopeds or motorcycles, requiring registration and insurance. Labour MP Julie Minns has highlighted the need for a ban on the sale of illegal e-bikes and conversion kits, arguing that these vehicles pose a significant risk to all road users.

The Metropolitan Police reported the highest number of seizures, indicating a growing trend of illegal e-bike usage in crimes and daily commuting. This situation underscores the urgent need for updated legislation to ensure safer riding practices and accountability for manufacturers.

As discussions around new laws continue, the focus remains on balancing the benefits of legal electric bikes for active travel against the risks posed by those that do not comply with safety standards. The government acknowledges the issue and is working to enhance police powers to address the problem effectively.
