Electric Bikes Surge as Fuel Prices Climb in Nigeria

As petrol prices soar in Nigeria, electric motorcycles are gaining traction among riders seeking to cut costs. Following the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023, petrol prices have skyrocketed, prompting many to reconsider their transportation options. Riders in Gombe report significant savings on fuel and maintenance, with some claiming weekly savings of around 5,000 naira.

Despite the benefits, the high initial cost of electric bikes, approximately 1 million naira, remains a barrier for many households. Additionally, unreliable electricity supply complicates the situation, as charging at home is often impractical. Riders are calling for better infrastructure, such as solar-powered battery-swap stations, to make electric bikes more accessible.

The shift to electric motorcycles could also have positive environmental impacts, as they produce no exhaust emissions. With road transport contributing significantly to air pollution in Nigerian cities, the adoption of electric bikes may help improve air quality over time.

While electric motorcycles are still a niche option, their increasing presence on the streets of Gombe signals a potential transformation in Nigeria’s transport landscape, driven by economic necessity and environmental awareness.
