Energy Bills at Risk as Houthis Strengthen Control in Yemen

Calls are growing for UK Mayor Andy Burnham to classify the Houthis as a terrorist organisation, as their recent advances threaten global energy supplies. The Houthis have tightened their grip on the Red Sea coastline, a crucial shipping route, raising fears that this could lead to soaring energy bills for Britons.

Former British ambassador to Yemen, Edmund Fitton-Brown, has highlighted the absurdity of the UK not designating the Houthis as terrorists, despite their military actions. He argues that the group’s control over key areas could disrupt energy supplies, which would have a direct impact on household energy costs in the UK.

The Houthis’ recent military successes have intensified fighting in Yemen, particularly around Marib, which holds significant oil and gas reserves. This instability could lead to further increases in global energy prices, affecting consumers in the UK who are already facing rising costs.

Proscribing the Houthis would allow the UK to take stronger actions against the group, including freezing assets and criminalising support for them. However, concerns remain about the humanitarian impact on Yemenis living under Houthi control, complicating the decision for UK officials.
