Environmental Crisis Unfolds in the Persian Gulf Amid Conflict

Recent attacks in the Strait of Hormuz have led to significant oil spills, raising alarms about an environmental crisis. Satellite imagery reveals that oil slicks are spreading towards protected ecosystems, including coral reefs and mangrove forests, threatening biodiversity and local communities.

Greenpeace has identified multiple oil slicks, with one area alone covering approximately 240 square kilometres. Although weather conditions have caused some slicks to disperse, the long-term ecological impact remains severe, as oil can sink into sediments and disrupt ecosystems for decades.

The situation is exacerbated by the ongoing conflict, which hampers rapid response efforts. Coastal communities, reliant on fishing and desalinated water, face dire consequences as oil contamination threatens their livelihoods and drinking supplies.

Experts warn that the ecological toll of this conflict underscores the urgent need for a transition away from fossil fuels. As the war continues, the risk of further spills and environmental degradation looms large, highlighting vulnerabilities in both human and ecological systems in the region.
