Recent attacks by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) in South Kordofan have resulted in the deaths of at least 27 individuals, including four children. This violence, targeting the Otoro tribe, highlights a troubling escalation in ethnic tensions within the region, which is already grappling with the broader civil war that erupted in April 2023.
The Sudan Doctors Network has condemned these actions as a violation of international humanitarian law, warning that such targeted attacks could deepen the ethnic conflict in South Kordofan. The ongoing violence has led to significant displacement, with many fleeing to safer areas like Abu Hitan and Kadugli, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
The SPLM-N’s alignment with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) complicates the situation further, as it intertwines local ethnic disputes with the larger national conflict. The civil war has already claimed over 59,000 lives and displaced approximately 14 million people, with two-thirds of the population now in need of humanitarian assistance.
As the international community is urged to intervene, the situation remains precarious. Continued violence not only threatens the immediate safety of civilians but also risks entrenching ethnic divisions that could have long-lasting impacts on Sudan’s stability and peace efforts in the region.
