Ethiopia’s Ruling Party Dominates Parliament Amid Ongoing Conflicts

Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party has achieved a remarkable victory, securing 90% of the parliamentary seats in the recent elections. This overwhelming majority, with 438 out of 486 seats, positions Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for another five-year term. However, this success comes against a backdrop of significant unrest, as voting was suspended in key regions like Tigray, Oromia, and Amhara due to ongoing conflicts.

The fragmented opposition struggled to compete, with many parties lacking the necessary funding to mount effective challenges. The Prosperity Party faced minimal opposition in 64 constituencies, highlighting the challenges faced by rival parties. Analysts are concerned that without addressing the underlying ethnic tensions and insurgencies, the new parliament may struggle to achieve lasting peace and security.

This electoral outcome raises questions about the future of governance in Ethiopia, particularly in light of the unresolved ethnic conflicts that have plagued the nation. The northern Tigray region, in particular, remains a focal point of instability, following a brutal conflict that lasted from 2020 to 2022.

As Abiy Ahmed prepares to lead for another term, the expectations for peace and stability are high. Observers hope that his government will prioritise resolving these conflicts to foster a more united and secure Ethiopia, as the repercussions of unrest continue to affect daily life for millions of citizens.
