New EU Air Travel Rights Package: What It Means for Passengers

The EU is set to approve a new air travel passenger rights package that aims to enhance protections for travellers. This reform, which has already received backing from the European Parliament, will simplify the process for compensation claims, making it easier for passengers to seek redress in case of flight disruptions.

While the core compensation rules for delayed or cancelled flights will largely remain unchanged, the new regulations will clarify passenger rights during travel disruptions. For instance, passengers will still be entitled to refunds if their flight is delayed by three hours or more due to the airline’s fault, but the criteria for what constitutes a disruption will be more clearly defined.

The reforms will apply to all flights departing from EU airports and those arriving if operated by EU-based airlines. This means that UK travellers flying with EU carriers will also benefit from these enhanced rights, potentially leading to a shift in how airlines manage customer service and compensation processes.

Set to take effect in mid-2027, these changes could reshape the air travel landscape, prompting airlines to adapt their policies and procedures to comply with the new regulations, ultimately impacting the travel experience for millions of passengers across Europe and beyond.
