The European Union Drugs Agency has issued a stark warning about the increasing complexity of the drug market in Europe, highlighting significant health risks associated with new synthetic opioids and high-potency cannabis. With the emergence of potent substances, the margin between safe use and overdose has become alarmingly narrow. In 2024 alone, over 7,600 overdose deaths were reported, underscoring the urgent need for public health interventions.
The report reveals that new psychoactive substances are being detected at an alarming rate, with 50 new substances identified in just one year. This rapid evolution complicates the landscape for users, who may unknowingly consume dangerous drugs. Cannabis, while still the most commonly used illicit drug, is also evolving, with higher potency products entering the market, raising concerns about long-term mental health effects.
Authorities are particularly worried about the adulteration of cannabis with synthetic cannabinoids and harmful pesticides, which can lead to severe health emergencies. The shifting trafficking routes and the increase in high-potency cannabis products from North America further complicate the situation, making it harder for users to gauge the risks involved.
In response, the EUDA is urging member states to enhance monitoring and preparedness systems. A balanced approach that addresses both supply and demand, while prioritising public health and human rights, is essential to mitigate these rising health and security risks in Europe’s drug market.
