EU’s Slow Response to Rising Cyberscam Threats

Recent findings reveal that Europeans lost approximately €50 billion to online scams in the past year, highlighting significant vulnerabilities in the EU’s response to this growing threat. Despite 75% of adults encountering scams, only a fraction reported their experiences to authorities, with many unaware of the scams until it was too late. This gap in awareness and reporting underscores a critical need for improved education and intervention strategies.

The report from the Global Anti-Scam Alliance indicates that while the EU has taken some steps, such as sanctioning a few individuals linked to scams, it lags behind the US and UK in addressing the Southeast Asian networks responsible for many of these scams. The US has actively targeted these networks, imposing sanctions and indictments, while the EU’s fragmented approach has resulted in a lack of cohesive action.

As scams evolve rapidly, the EU’s current measures appear insufficient to protect its citizens. The growing financial losses and the increasing sophistication of scam operations suggest that the EU must adopt a more unified and aggressive strategy. This includes not only sanctions but also enhanced cooperation with Southeast Asian countries to dismantle these criminal networks.

Looking ahead, the EU plans to present an action plan against digital fraud by summer 2026, indicating a shift in perspective towards treating online scams as organized crime. However, the urgency of the situation calls for immediate action to safeguard European citizens from these pervasive threats.
