Europe’s AI Sovereignty at Risk After Anthropic’s Model Suspension

The recent decision by Anthropic to halt access to its advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, has raised significant concerns across Europe regarding technological sovereignty. This move, prompted by a directive from the US government, underscores the vulnerability of European nations that rely on foreign technology. Politicians are now calling for urgent investment in homegrown AI capabilities to mitigate such risks in the future.

British MP Tom Tugendhat highlighted the implications for national security, stating that the disabling of these models is indicative of a broader trend where technology dictates sovereignty. The abrupt loss of access affects various sectors, including healthcare and research, which had begun integrating these AI tools into their operations.

European leaders, including former French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, have echoed these sentiments, arguing that AI has become as critical as electricity or the internet. Without control over their own AI infrastructure, nations risk being at the mercy of external powers, which can dictate access and usage.

The situation serves as a wake-up call for Europe to bolster its technological independence. As calls for increased support for local AI initiatives grow, the urgency to develop competitive alternatives to US technology becomes paramount, ensuring that Europe is not left vulnerable in the global AI race.
