Ex-Soldier Sentenced for Storing UVF-Linked Weapons

A former soldier has been sentenced to three years in prison for possessing a pipe bomb, gun, and ammunition connected to the East Belfast Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF). Bryce Pounder, 38, pleaded guilty to charges of possession of explosives and a firearm in suspicious circumstances. His case highlights the ongoing issues of paramilitary influence in Northern Ireland, even as he was not accused of direct membership in the UVF.

Pounder was arrested during police raids in November 2018, where authorities discovered a dismantled pipe bomb, a silencer, and nearly 100 rounds of ammunition in his home. The court heard that his involvement stemmed from a drug-related debt of £1,800, which left him vulnerable and coerced into storing the weapons out of fear.

The judge noted that there was no evidence of Pounder’s allegiance to any terrorist organisation, framing his actions as a response to situational pressures rather than ideological commitment. This case raises concerns about the intersection of crime and former military personnel, particularly in areas with a history of paramilitary activity.

As Northern Ireland continues to navigate its post-conflict landscape, incidents like this serve as a reminder of the lingering challenges posed by criminal elements linked to paramilitary groups, affecting community safety and trust in law enforcement.
