Oxfordshire County Council has approved a significant expansion of its e-scooter and e-bike hire scheme, moving beyond the city of Oxford to include surrounding towns and villages. This initiative aims to improve access to low-cost, short-distance travel, potentially benefiting communities that have limited public transport options. The new contract will consolidate services under a single operator, set to begin when the current contract expires in 2026.
The expansion will introduce e-scooter and e-bike hire in areas such as Botley, Kennington, Kidlington, and Horspath, with future plans to reach larger towns like Abingdon and Wheatley. This move reflects a growing trend towards micromobility solutions, which are seen as essential for reducing congestion and enhancing local transport networks. The council is also prioritising the establishment of designated parking bays to address concerns about improper parking and safety.
In addition to expanding the network, the council will implement stricter regulations on safety and parking enforcement. Operators will be required to provide detailed usage data, which will help assess the scheme’s effectiveness and inform future expansions. This data-driven approach aims to ensure that the benefits of e-scooters and e-bikes are equitably distributed across the county, particularly to areas that have historically been underserved by public transport.
The initiative aligns with national efforts to promote sustainable transport options, as the Department for Transport has extended e-scooter trials across England until 2028. As Oxfordshire continues to develop its micromobility strategy, the focus will be on balancing accessibility with responsible usage, ensuring that these new transport options enhance rather than hinder community life.
