Experts Urge Immediate Action on AI Economic Disruption

Over 200 economists and AI researchers have issued a stark warning about the impending economic impact of artificial intelligence. In an open letter, they stress that policymakers must act now to prepare for changes that could be more transformative than the Industrial Revolution, but occur at a much faster pace.

The letter highlights potential risks, including significant job displacement, alongside opportunities for improved living standards. Experts argue that without proactive measures, the benefits of AI may disproportionately favour wealthier nations, exacerbating global inequalities.

Among the signatories are 16 Nobel laureates, who emphasize the urgency of establishing incentives and regulations that ensure AI complements human labour rather than replaces it. The call to action comes as companies like Amazon announce job cuts linked to AI advancements, signalling a shift in the labour market that could affect many workers.

As the window for effective policy-making narrows, experts warn that delaying action could lead to severe consequences for both individuals and economies. The time to prepare for AI’s impact is now, as the future of work and economic stability hangs in the balance.
