An amber alert for extreme heat has been issued across central England, with temperatures potentially reaching 38C. This warning affects major cities including London, Birmingham, and Sheffield, and is expected to disrupt travel and power supplies. The UK Health Security Agency has also issued heat health alerts, urging the public to stay hydrated and check on vulnerable individuals.

The Environment Agency reports that 71.3% of England is experiencing flash drought, a rapid onset of drought conditions due to low rainfall and high temperatures. This has led to widespread drought declarations, particularly in the East Midlands and South East, exacerbating the risk of wildfires. Firefighters are currently battling multiple blazes, including significant incidents in the New Forest.

This summer has already seen record-breaking heatwaves, contributing to over 2,800 heat-related deaths. The ongoing extreme weather is a stark reminder of the impacts of climate change, with many farmers warning of a brutal harvest and potential food price inflation as crops suffer.

As the heatwave continues, the forecast suggests a brief respite with cooler temperatures and rain expected over the weekend. However, experts warn that this will not sufficiently alleviate the drought conditions, indicating a long-term challenge for the UK as it grapples with the consequences of climate change.
