Extreme Weather Threatens UK Harvests: A Looming Crisis

Farmers in the UK are facing a potentially catastrophic harvest in 2026, with predictions indicating it could be the worst on record. The extreme summer, characterised by unprecedented heat and drought, has drastically reduced cereal and oilseed yields, with estimates suggesting a shortfall of 2.5 million tonnes. This could lead to losses of up to £390 million for farmers, significantly impacting food supply and prices.

The situation is exacerbated by a pattern of extreme weather events, which have been linked to climate change. After two consecutive years of poor harvests, farmers had hoped for a recovery this season, only to be met with harsh conditions that have devastated crops. The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board reports that wheat yields are particularly affected, averaging only 6.8 tonnes per hectare, far below the 10-year average.

As farmers grapple with these challenges, many are expressing deep concerns about the future viability of their businesses. The ongoing climate crisis is forcing a reevaluation of farming practices, with some farmers now acknowledging the reality of climate change and its impact on their livelihoods. The situation raises urgent questions about food security in the UK, as the agricultural sector becomes increasingly vulnerable to climate extremes.

Experts warn that without significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the UK could face a ‘climate doom loop,’ where repeated extreme weather events undermine agricultural productivity. This highlights the critical need for sustainable farming practices and a shift towards net-zero emissions to safeguard the future of food production in the UK.
