Family Outraged by Early Release of Hit-and-Run Driver

The family of 13-year-old Kaylan Hippsley is devastated after learning that Harley Whiteman, the driver responsible for Kaylan’s death in a hit-and-run, may be released early from prison. Originally sentenced to nine years, Whiteman’s term has been reduced to just four years under the UK government’s early release scheme, allowing him to return to the community as soon as this autumn.

Kaylan was struck while walking with friends, and Whiteman, who had been drinking and using drugs, fled the scene before returning to confront bystanders. The family feels that the justice system has failed them, as they now face the prospect of Whiteman’s early release after only two years in prison.

Julie Craig, Kaylan’s cousin, expressed the family’s outrage, stating that the decision feels like a betrayal, especially considering Kaylan’s young age and the impact of his loss on their lives. They have initiated a petition to prevent Whiteman’s release, highlighting the need for justice and accountability in such tragic cases.

The Ministry of Justice has defended the early release policy, citing overcrowded prisons as a significant concern. However, the family argues that the rights of victims should be prioritized, and they are calling for a reassessment of policies that allow offenders to return to society so soon after committing serious crimes.
