Andy Owens, a farmer from Herefordshire, is facing the harsh realities of climate change, witnessing increased flooding and drought on his land. In his youth, flooding occurred only a couple of times a year, but now it happens six to seven times each winter, severely impacting his operations.
The recent droughts have also taken a toll, with Owens reporting only 40ml of rain during critical months in 2025. This drastic change has forced him to relocate sheep frequently, complicating farm management and increasing operational costs.
Last year, the drought reduced his hay and silage production to just 30% of what was needed, compelling him to purchase additional supplies from south Wales. To combat these challenges, Owens diversified his farm by introducing a pumpkin patch, which has unexpectedly become a vital revenue stream, covering essential costs and allowing the farm to remain operational.
Despite the ongoing climate challenges, Owens’ innovative approach illustrates how farmers can adapt and find new opportunities amidst adversity, ensuring their livelihoods in an uncertain future.
