Farmers Urged to Diversify Apple Varieties Amidst Sales Struggles

Henry Dobell, a farmer from Kenton, is calling for a shift in the apple market as he faces significant challenges selling traditional English varieties. This year’s extreme heat has resulted in smaller yields, with many apples failing to meet the size requirements of wholesalers. Dobell notes that about 25% of his crop is below the desired size, leading to a worrying decline in sales.

He believes that the UK has developed a preference for bland, uniform apples, losing appreciation for diverse and seasonal varieties. This shift in consumer taste is impacting not just farmers but also the broader agricultural landscape, as growers struggle to adapt to changing market demands.

The situation is echoed by Tim Chapman of Giggler Cider, who reports a similarly poor crop, raising concerns about the future of cider production. With climate change posing ongoing threats to crop yields, farmers may need to rethink their strategies to ensure sustainability and profitability.

As the industry grapples with these challenges, the call for bolder choices in apple cultivation could be crucial for revitalising interest in British apples and securing the livelihoods of local farmers.
