Female Therapists Take Stand Against Inappropriate Behaviour

In a bold move, Maria, a massage therapist in East Ayrshire, has decided to ban most male clients from her practice due to persistent inappropriate behaviour. After experiencing discomfort and fear from several encounters, she now only treats long-term male clients, prioritising her safety and comfort. This decision reflects a growing trend among female therapists who are increasingly selective about their clientele, often due to similar experiences.

Maria’s situation highlights a significant issue within the massage therapy industry, where a lack of regulation leaves therapists vulnerable. Many female therapists report facing unwanted advances and inappropriate comments, which can create a hostile work environment. Industry leaders are calling for better training and a governing body to help protect therapists and establish clear boundaries.

Dani, another therapist based in Glasgow, echoes Maria’s sentiments, stating that safety is her top priority. She only treats male clients by referral, having previously barred individuals for making inappropriate jokes. This cautious approach is becoming more common as therapists seek to safeguard their reputations and well-being.

The absence of a regulatory body in Scotland means that therapists often have nowhere to report incidents of misconduct. As more women opt out of treating men, the industry may face a significant shift, prompting calls for change to ensure a safer working environment for all.
