A derelict cottage featured in the film Anemone, directed by Ronan Day-Lewis, is set to be transformed into a conservation hub for red squirrels on Anglesey. The site, which has historical ties as a gamekeeper’s cottage, will play a crucial role in managing the local red squirrel population, which faces threats from habitat loss and invasive grey squirrels.
The plans submitted to Anglesey council include converting the cottage for storage and creating a new timber building for conservation efforts. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to control grey squirrel invasions, with 60 grey squirrels already removed since early 2024.
The proposal highlights the ecological importance of pine martens, which help regulate grey squirrel numbers. The conservation work at this site is spearheaded by an experienced individual who has been involved in red squirrel management since 1997, including successful reintroduction efforts in various locations across Anglesey.
This project not only aims to protect a priority species but also underscores the intersection of film and environmental conservation, showcasing how cultural landmarks can contribute to ecological efforts.
