Florence has opened Italy’s first centre dedicated to addressing digital addiction, particularly among young people. Named “Discover – Out of the shell,” this initiative aims to promote conscious use of technology and prevent the misuse of digital platforms. The centre will offer guidance and workshops to help young individuals balance their online and offline lives, fostering social interactions and community engagement.
The project, supported by ASL Toscana centro and local authorities, reflects a growing recognition of the social and cultural repercussions of excessive screen time. As similar initiatives emerge across Europe, including age restrictions in countries like Australia and France, Italy’s approach focuses on prevention rather than prohibition. This could set a precedent for how digital addiction is addressed in the country.
The centre will cater to individuals aged 10 to 25, providing a space for education and support. It aims to empower young people to become active participants in their digital lives, rather than passive consumers. This proactive stance may influence future policies and community strategies regarding technology use.
As digital addiction becomes a pressing issue globally, Florence’s initiative could inspire other regions in Italy and beyond to adopt similar frameworks. By prioritising education and community involvement, the Discover centre seeks to rebuild social connections that digital isolation threatens to erode.
