The remains of six soldiers who died in World War One have been interred in Belgium, over a century after their deaths. These men, identified through DNA analysis, were discovered during archaeological work in 2020. Their burial at Tyne Cot Cemetery marks a poignant moment for their families, who can now honour their ancestors with a proper resting place.

Among the soldiers was Private Horace Cook from Essex and Private Frederick Martin from London. Their identities were confirmed through a meticulous process involving family DNA samples, highlighting the personal connections that remain even after a century. This event serves as a reminder of the countless soldiers whose sacrifices have often gone unrecognised.

The soldiers were likely killed by a shell strike while operating a Lewis gun on October 6, 1918. Their story reflects the tragic realities of war and the importance of remembering those who served. Family members expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to finally give their loved ones a dignified burial.

This burial not only provides closure for the families but also underscores the ongoing efforts to identify and honour the fallen. The Ministry of Defence’s initiative to trace these soldiers illustrates a commitment to preserving their legacies and ensuring they are not forgotten.
