France’s Bold Move to Ban Social Media for Under-15s

France has become the first EU country to implement a blanket ban on social media for children under 15, a significant step amid rising concerns about the impact of digital content on young minds. This legislation, championed by President Emmanuel Macron, aims to protect children from harmful online influences, especially following tragic incidents linked to platforms like TikTok.

The law also prohibits mobile phone use in high schools, reflecting a broader strategy to limit screen time among youth. Advocates argue that this measure is essential for safeguarding mental health, as studies indicate that excessive social media use can lead to issues such as depression and self-harm.

However, the implementation of this law raises practical challenges, including how to enforce age verification and manage existing accounts of underage users. Critics question its constitutionality and the feasibility of enforcement, suggesting that the law may not be as straightforward as it appears.

As other countries, including Australia and Spain, consider similar restrictions, France’s decision could set a precedent for digital policy in Europe. The ongoing debate highlights the urgent need for effective measures to protect children in an increasingly digital world.
