Freedom of Expression at Stake in Finnish Politician’s Appeal

Päivi Räsänen, a Finnish MP, has lodged an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights following her conviction under Finland’s hate speech law. This case, which has spanned seven years, raises significant questions about freedom of expression in Europe, particularly regarding religious beliefs and their public articulation.

Räsänen was found guilty for views expressed in a church booklet from 2004, which has led to fines and a court order to remove the booklet from public access. The implications of her conviction extend beyond personal penalties, as it could set a precedent for how religious teachings are regulated across Europe.

The UK’s recent revocation of Räsänen’s Electronic Travel Authorisation adds another layer of complexity. This decision not only prevents her from entering the UK but also jeopardises her ability to speak at a religious freedom conference in Belfast, highlighting the potential for state actions to inhibit free speech.

As the appeal progresses, it underscores a growing concern about censorship and the limits of free expression in democratic societies. The outcome could influence how similar cases are handled in the future, affecting both religious and political discourse across Europe.
