Fresh Produce Shelf Life: What Your Supermarket Isn’t Telling You

A recent investigation by Which? has revealed that Waitrose, despite its premium pricing, offers the shortest shelf life for fresh produce among major UK supermarkets. On average, items delivered from Waitrose had just 7.7 days remaining until their use-by dates, raising concerns for consumers who expect quality with their higher spending.

This finding is significant as it highlights a growing frustration among shoppers who receive perishable items that are nearly expired. With 16% of consumers citing short shelf life as their top complaint regarding online grocery deliveries, the implications for meal planning and food waste are considerable. Shoppers may find themselves forced to adjust their meals or risk throwing away groceries they paid for.

In contrast, Asda topped the list with an average shelf life of 10.4 days, showcasing a stark difference in quality and freshness across retailers. This discrepancy not only affects consumer satisfaction but also influences purchasing decisions, as shoppers may seek out supermarkets that deliver fresher products.

As the demand for transparency in food quality increases, supermarkets must ensure their freshness claims align with customer experiences. The investigation serves as a reminder for consumers to inspect their deliveries closely and consider their options carefully when shopping online.
