Galicia is implementing an ambitious plan to tackle wildfires by deploying artificial intelligence and a network of satellites and cameras. This initiative comes after the region experienced its most devastating wildfire season in decades, with over 118,000 hectares burned in 2025 alone. The new strategy aims to detect fires within minutes, significantly reducing the time between ignition and response, which is crucial for containment.
The AI systems will analyse images from both ground-based cameras and satellites, identifying early signs of fire such as smoke and heat signatures. When a potential fire is detected, alerts will be sent to technicians for verification before emergency crews are dispatched. This rapid response is designed to prevent small fires from escalating into uncontrollable megafires.
Galicia’s approach reflects a broader trend in Europe, where countries like Greece and Portugal are also integrating advanced technology into their firefighting strategies. The use of AI and satellite technology is becoming essential as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of wildfires across the continent.
As the high-risk season begins, Galicia’s investment of €213 million in fire prevention technology underscores the urgent need for effective wildfire management.
