Gambling Websites Face Privacy Scrutiny Over Cookie Practices

A recent study has revealed that nearly 86% of licensed UK gambling websites are potentially violating GDPR regulations regarding user data consent. This non-compliance is particularly concerning as it highlights a pattern of ‘data surveillance’ where operators collect tracking information before users have given explicit consent.

The research indicates that many gambling sites employ ‘dark patterns’ to manipulate users into accepting data sharing. For instance, 60% of these sites visually emphasise the least privacy-friendly options, while 29% pre-select settings that compromise user privacy. Such tactics raise significant ethical questions about user autonomy and informed consent.

The implications of these findings extend beyond mere compliance; they suggest a systemic issue within the gambling industry regarding data privacy. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has been working to enforce GDPR compliance, yet the study suggests that the gambling sector lags behind other industries in adhering to these regulations.

As the ICO continues its efforts to ensure lawful cookie practices, the potential for increased scrutiny and enforcement actions against non-compliant gambling operators could reshape how these companies handle user data. This could lead to significant changes in user experience and privacy protections in the online gambling landscape.
