Gamers Push Back Against Game Shutdowns

A growing movement called Stop Killing Games is challenging the practice of game publishers shutting down online services, leaving players without access to titles they’ve purchased. Founded by YouTuber Ross Scott, the campaign has garnered nearly 1.3 million signatures on a petition submitted to the European Commission, highlighting the emotional impact on players who feel their investments are being erased.

The issue gained traction after Ubisoft announced it would discontinue its online-only racing game, The Crew, which had a loyal player base. Many gamers, like Chemicalflood, expressed their frustration, noting that the game was a significant part of their lives and shared experiences with family. The campaign argues that publishers should consider responsible end-of-life plans, such as making games playable offline.

While the gaming industry defends its right to shut down servers, citing commercial viability, the campaign raises questions about ownership and consumer rights in the digital age. The debate is particularly relevant as more games rely on online services, and the community aspect of gaming becomes increasingly important.

As the campaign progresses, it could lead to significant changes in how game publishers approach the lifecycle of their products. If successful, it may redefine consumer rights in the gaming industry, ensuring that players retain access to their purchased games long after official support ends.
