Gatwick Airport has launched a new overnight train service to Reading, aimed at improving travel options for passengers with early or late flights. This trial service, operated by Great Western Railway, will run on Saturdays and Mondays, providing five overnight trains that stop at key stations including Guildford and Reigate.
Currently, GWR trains only operate during the day, leaving passengers without rail options for late arrivals or early departures. The new service will fill this gap, with trains departing Gatwick at 00:30, 01:24, and 04:00 on Saturdays, and at 02:28 and 03:30 from Reading.
The introduction of this service is significant as it reflects a growing trend towards sustainable transport solutions, supporting increased air travel while reducing reliance on cars. Gatwick’s management sees this as a step towards enhancing connectivity for both passengers and airport staff.
The trial will assess demand for these overnight services, with the potential for a permanent schedule depending on its popularity. This could lead to more comprehensive rail options for airport access, reshaping how people travel to and from Gatwick in the future.
