In the midst of ongoing conflict in Gaza, a new initiative is providing women with a vital sanctuary for emotional healing and support. The women-only safe spaces, established by Collective Development Projects, offer psychological assistance and a platform for women to share their experiences and challenges. As many women in Gaza face the trauma of losing loved ones and the burden of displacement, these sessions are crucial for fostering community and resilience.
Ola Saleh, a participant who lost her husband in the conflict, describes the sessions as a rare opportunity to connect with others who understand her pain. With an estimated 16,000 women in Gaza now heading families alone, the need for such spaces has never been more pressing. The safe spaces not only provide emotional relief but also address practical issues like economic hardship and childcare in a war-torn environment.
The initiative has seen rapid growth, with attendance increasing from 60 to over 75 women in just a few days. This reflects a deep-seated need for safe environments where women can express their emotions and gain support. Alaa Daoud, the field coordinator, emphasizes the importance of these sessions in helping women navigate their grief and responsibilities while fostering a sense of hope.
As the programme expands to other areas in Gaza, it highlights the resilience of women in the face of adversity. For many, these safe spaces are not just about coping with loss; they are about reclaiming their identities and finding strength in community. The initiative serves as a reminder of the power of shared experiences and the importance of mental health support in times of crisis.
