GCSE Resits Linked to Declining Mental Health in Students

A recent study from University College London reveals that compulsory GCSE resits in England are adversely affecting teenagers’ mental wellbeing. Unlike their peers in Wales and Northern Ireland, students in England who fail to achieve a grade 4 in English or maths experience significant drops in confidence and increased anxiety. This trend raises concerns about the long-term implications for students, as those struggling with resits are more likely to disengage from education altogether.

The research highlights a worrying correlation between mandatory resits and the rising number of young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET). With around 180,000 students expected to retake English and 175,000 in maths this year, the pressure to succeed can lead to demotivation and dropout. The study suggests that the resits policy, introduced in 2014, may be a key factor in this troubling trend.

Gender differences in the impact of resits were also noted, with girls particularly affected by maths resits and boys by English. This indicates that the policy may exacerbate existing educational inequalities, as students face additional stress in subjects where they already struggle. The findings call for a reevaluation of the resits policy to better support students’ mental health and educational outcomes.

In response, the Department for Education is implementing changes aimed at reducing the negative effects of resits. These include new qualifications designed to prepare students more effectively before they retake exams. However, the success of these measures remains to be seen, as the current system continues to pose challenges for many young learners.
