Jennifer Bishop, founder of London Letters, notes a significant rise in members aged 18 to 25, highlighting how unfamiliar handwritten correspondence is for a generation accustomed to digital communication.
The loneliness epidemic among young adults is prompting this change. A recent survey revealed that two-thirds of respondents aged 18 to 29 have opted for online time over social plans, with nearly half feeling more isolated due to social media. The appeal of receiving a handwritten letter offers a tangible connection that many are craving, as it provides a physical reminder of someone’s thoughts and feelings.
However, this revival of letter writing faces challenges, particularly with the declining postal infrastructure. Royal Mail’s delivery numbers have plummeted, and stamp prices have soared, making it more expensive to send letters. As younger generations learn the basics of letter writing, they are also confronted with the reality that the very system they rely on is under threat.
Despite these hurdles, the Handwritten Letter Appreciation Society has gained traction, attracting members of all ages who are disillusioned with digital communication. The society emphasizes the privacy and intimacy of letter writing, which remains unmatched by any online platform.
