As a result, strawberries can be grown year-round, allowing for fresh produce during winter months when imports are typically relied upon.

Simon Pearson, the founding director of the university’s Institute of Agri-Food Technology, notes that geothermal heating can reduce energy costs by about one-third compared to traditional natural gas heating. This could lead to a resurgence in greenhouse expansion across the UK, particularly as energy prices have surged due to geopolitical tensions.
The implications extend beyond strawberries; the facility plans to cultivate tomatoes and other crops, potentially reducing the UK’s heavy reliance on imports.
