In response to the rising influence of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), a coalition of over 80 groups, including trade unions, churches, and human rights organizations, has formed the Together for Democracy alliance. This initiative aims to protect individuals and institutions targeted by far-right extremism, highlighting the urgent need for solidarity in safeguarding democratic values.

Activists like Felix Pankonin and Keerthana Kuperan have experienced increased threats and violence, prompting a shift in security protocols within their organizations. The alliance not only seeks to provide legal and financial support but also aims to empower activists to resist unlawful orders should the AfD gain political power.

The alliance’s Solidarity Agreement is a significant step in countering the normalization of far-right ideologies in Germany, particularly in regions where the AfD’s influence is growing. The involvement of major organizations like the German Trade Union Federation (DGB) underscores the collective commitment to defending democracy and human rights.

As the political landscape shifts, the alliance’s efforts could have lasting implications for civil society in Germany, fostering a culture of resilience against extremism and ensuring that those who stand for democratic principles are not left vulnerable to intimidation or violence.
