Annalena Baerbock, the president of the UN General Assembly, has highlighted the significance of Germany’s national football team as a role model for the country’s youth. Praising the team’s diversity, she noted that it represents a new generation of players, contrasting sharply with earlier times when discussions about race and identity were more contentious.
Baerbock recalled the debut of Gerald Asamoah, one of the first players of African descent on the national team, and how his selection sparked debates about what it means to be German. Today, the current squad includes 11 players with immigrant backgrounds, reflecting a shift in societal attitudes towards diversity in sports.
However, this progress is not without its challenges. Some political factions, like the Alternative for Germany (AfD), have criticized the team’s diversity, calling it the “rainbow squad.” A recent survey indicated that a portion of the public still harbours preferences for a less diverse team, underscoring the ongoing need for anti-racism initiatives.
Baerbock emphasized that sports, particularly football, can unite people regardless of their backgrounds. She expressed hope for the team’s success in the upcoming World Cup, asserting that teamwork and spirit often outweigh individual fame. This message of inclusivity is vital for inspiring young people across Germany.
