The UNHCR has emphasised that any changes to the EU’s temporary protection scheme for Ukrainian refugees must be implemented gradually. This comes as some EU nations, including Poland and Germany, consider excluding military-age men from the scheme, which currently protects over 4.37 million Ukrainians. The ongoing war in Ukraine has intensified, making the need for these protections even more critical.
Currently, most Ukrainian men aged 23 to 60 are unable to leave Ukraine due to conscription laws, with exceptions for certain groups. The UN’s Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, Kelly Clements, highlighted that the circumstances necessitating the protection scheme have not changed, urging EU countries to maintain support for those unable to return safely.
Clements warned that any abrupt changes could place undue pressure on other nations and disrupt the lives of those seeking refuge. The debate around the protection scheme reflects broader concerns about the humanitarian impact of the war and the responsibilities of EU member states.
