Greek Travellers Embrace Short Breaks Amid Changing Trends

Recent data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority reveals a significant shift in travel patterns among Greek citizens, particularly highlighting a surge in short breaks. Trips lasting one to three nights saw a remarkable increase of 26.7% in 2025, indicating a growing preference for quick getaways over longer vacations. This trend suggests that many are opting for more frequent, shorter escapes, possibly due to changing work-life balances or economic considerations.

Interestingly, the demographic of travellers over 65 is driving much of this growth, with their trips increasing by 28.5%. This age group not only represents a substantial portion of personal trips but also tends to stay longer at their destinations, suggesting a shift in how older adults engage with travel. Their increased spending and overnight stays reflect a desire for experiences that may enhance their quality of life.

Despite the rise in short breaks, traditional holidays of four to seven nights still dominate, accounting for 41.5% of trips. However, the slower growth in this category indicates that while long holidays remain popular, they are not expanding at the same rate as shorter trips. This could signal a broader trend where flexibility and spontaneity in travel are becoming more valued.

The overall increase in personal trips, which rose to 7.93 million, alongside a 13.3% rise in total spending, highlights a robust recovery in the travel sector. With the majority of trips still occurring domestically, the growing interest in international destinations like Italy and the UK suggests that Greek travellers are increasingly looking beyond their borders for new experiences.
