New Guidelines Allow Girls in Northern Ireland Schools to Wear Trousers

From next year, schools in Northern Ireland will be required to allow girls the option to wear trousers as part of their uniform. This change follows revised guidelines announced by Education Minister Paul Givan, responding to growing demands from students and campaigners for greater choice in school attire.

The decision comes after a law was passed last year aimed at reducing uniform costs, which granted girls the legal right to challenge schools that prohibited trousers. However, many felt this initial measure was insufficient, prompting further action from Givan, who acknowledged the clear message from young people about their preferences.

While the new guidelines will not take immediate effect, they represent a significant shift in policy, reflecting changing attitudes towards gender and uniformity in schools. Critics of Givan’s previous stance have pointed out that the need for such legislation in 2026 highlights ongoing issues regarding gender equality in education.

This move is expected to ease financial burdens on families, as trousers can be a more cost-effective option than traditional skirts. It also underscores the importance of student voices in shaping school policies, marking a step towards more inclusive practices in Northern Ireland’s education system.
