New Guidelines for Energy Bill Support Could Change Lives

Energy UK has proposed a new framework for determining who qualifies for assistance with energy bills, suggesting that household income, energy consumption, and health conditions should all be considered. This shift aims to ensure that support reaches those who truly need it, particularly as energy prices are projected to hit a three-year high due to ongoing global crises.

Currently, the primary support mechanism is the Warm Home Discount, which only benefits those on means-tested benefits. Energy UK argues that this approach is inadequate, as many households facing high energy costs do not qualify for such benefits. By integrating health data and energy usage patterns, the proposed system could provide a more nuanced understanding of a household’s needs.

The report highlights that households with disabilities or those living in poorly insulated homes often have higher energy requirements. By implementing a tiered discount system, the government could allocate more substantial support to those in greater need, potentially increasing the overall cost of the scheme but ensuring that help is more effectively targeted.

Energy UK’s Chief Executive emphasised the urgency of reforming the current support system, which she claims is failing to adequately assist those struggling with rising energy costs. The proposed changes could lead to a more sustainable and equitable approach to energy bill support, addressing the ongoing cost-of-living crisis more effectively.
