Gulf States Seek Alternatives to Hormuz Amid Ongoing Tensions

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route, is under increasing scrutiny as Gulf states explore alternatives due to ongoing tensions. Saudi Arabia has successfully redirected oil exports through its East-West Pipeline, significantly increasing shipments via the Red Sea. This shift has allowed Saudi Arabia to maintain its oil flow despite disruptions in the Persian Gulf, showcasing the pipeline’s importance beyond just an emergency backup.

However, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) faces challenges in enhancing its own bypass capabilities. Despite having infrastructure designed to circumvent Hormuz, recent attacks have raised concerns about the security of these routes, limiting their effectiveness. The UAE’s alternative ports have seen a decline in traffic, indicating that simply having a backup is not enough if it is perceived as equally risky.

Long-term solutions are being discussed, including new pipelines connecting Iraq with Oman and Jordan, but these projects are costly and time-consuming. Estimates suggest that building a Basra-Aqaba pipeline could take five to seven years and cost billions, highlighting the urgency of finding immediate alternatives.

As the geopolitical landscape evolves, the reliance on alternative routes may expose vulnerabilities elsewhere, indicating that avoiding one chokepoint could lead to dependence on another. The situation underscores the complex interplay between energy security and regional stability, with significant implications for global oil markets.
