Harry Potter Fans Influence Power Link Route to Protect Dobby’s Tribute

Harry Potter enthusiasts have successfully diverted a multimillion-pound power link between the UK and Ireland to avoid disturbing a tribute to Dobby the House Elf. The £430 million Greenlink interconnector, which runs a 125-mile cable from Pembrokeshire to Wexford, was initially planned to pass directly under a memorial at Freshwater West beach, where Dobby’s death was filmed.

The project manager, Simon Ludlam, revealed that after a BBC interview, his firm received an overwhelming number of calls from fans expressing their concerns about the cable’s original route. This unexpected backlash prompted a reevaluation of the project, leading to a rerouting that respects the site cherished by fans.

Dobby’s grave, made of pebbles with heartfelt messages, has become a pilgrimage site for fans, who leave tokens of appreciation. The National Trust had previously agreed to preserve the tribute, highlighting its significance to the community and the environmental sensitivity of the area.

This incident underscores the power of fan communities in influencing projects, revealing how cultural symbols can impact infrastructure decisions. The rerouting not only satisfies fans but also reflects a growing recognition of the importance of cultural heritage in planning processes.
