Haverfordwest Castle’s Revamp: Aiming for Economic Revival

Haverfordwest Castle, an 800-year-old fortress in Pembrokeshire, is set for a £17.7 million refurbishment, closing temporarily until 2028. This ambitious project aims to transform the castle into a major tourist attraction, with plans for interactive exhibitions and community spaces that could host events for up to 500 people.

The local council believes that the castle’s revitalisation will serve as a catalyst for the regeneration of Haverfordwest, drawing visitors and boosting the local economy. By creating an all-weather attraction that highlights Pembrokeshire’s rich history, the council hopes to replicate the economic benefits seen in nearby Cardigan after its castle’s development.

The project will enhance the castle’s grounds, introducing green spaces and biodiversity initiatives, including a medicinal garden and pollinator-friendly planting. These improvements aim to create a welcoming environment for both tourists and locals, fostering community engagement through dedicated school programmes and volunteering opportunities.

With an estimated 63,000 visitors expected in the first year post-reopening, the castle’s refurbishment could significantly impact Haverfordwest’s economy, encouraging spending and revitalising the town centre. This initiative highlights the potential of heritage sites to drive local development and community pride.
