Health Ministry’s New Statute Faces Backlash from Workers

The recent approval of a new Framework Statute by the Health Ministry has sparked significant unrest among healthcare professionals. Despite the government’s claims of support from major trade unions, many health workers feel their critical demands have been overlooked. This discontent could lead to further protests and strikes, impacting healthcare delivery across the country.

Key issues include the treatment of overtime and on-call shifts, which health professionals argue should count towards Social Security contributions. The proposed statute reduces maximum working hours to 45 per week, yet it contains provisions that could allow for longer hours under certain conditions, raising concerns about worker exploitation.

The legislation is the first major update in two decades, but many in the sector believe it fails to address their needs adequately. Calls for a maximum 35-hour workweek and better compensation for night shifts highlight the ongoing struggle for improved working conditions.

As the bill moves to Congress for approval, the potential for widespread discontent among healthcare workers could disrupt services, affecting patient care and highlighting the ongoing challenges within the UK’s health system.
