Healthcare Crisis Looms in West Bank Amid Israeli Policies

A new report indicates the West Bank’s healthcare system is nearing collapse due to Israeli policies. With the Palestinian Authority (PA) struggling to pay health workers and purchase necessary medications, public healthcare facilities have significantly reduced operations. This has dire implications for patients who rely on these services, as many are left without critical treatment.

The withholding of tax revenues by Israel has severely hampered the PA’s ability to function, with approximately 75% of healthcare facilities operating just once or twice a week. The situation is compounded by increased military checkpoints and raids that further restrict Palestinians’ access to medical care, leading to life-threatening delays.

As the number of patients seeking help from mobile clinics doubles, chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes are going untreated. The PA’s health minister reports that unpaid staff are not showing up for work, exacerbating the backlog of cases and delaying essential surgeries.

This growing healthcare crisis highlights a critical vulnerability in the West Bank, where political pressures directly impact health outcomes. Without immediate intervention, the consequences for patients could be catastrophic, as many are already rationing medicines or going without necessary care altogether.
