Heatwaves in France: A Public Health Crisis Exposed

Recent studies reveal that heatwaves in France are responsible for approximately 5,400 deaths annually, highlighting a severe public health crisis. The Oxfam report indicates that the health risks extend beyond dehydration, with heart attack fatalities increasing by 7% during heatwaves, and women facing double the mortality risk on the hottest days.

Moreover, the impact of climate change is exacerbating social inequalities. Disadvantaged neighbourhoods experience a staggering 31% higher excess mortality compared to wealthier areas during summer months. Residents in affluent urban zones are significantly less exposed to extreme heat risks, illustrating a stark divide in vulnerability.

The Housing Foundation’s findings further underscore the issue, revealing that two-thirds of French citizens struggle to manage heat in their homes. Many lack essential features like shutters, which are crucial for preventing overheating, particularly in densely populated working-class areas where health and housing conditions are poorer.

In response, calls for urgent action are mounting. Advocates are urging the government to prioritise housing renovations and implement protective measures for vulnerable populations, including a proposed ‘Zero boiling-hot homes’ bill. This initiative aims to address the urgent need for climate adaptation and safeguard public health against rising temperatures.
