PC Jay Wakefield of Surrey Police is being celebrated for his quick thinking and bravery after rescuing a driver from a burning car. The incident occurred on 27 June 2025, when Wakefield witnessed a crash involving a car and a lorry. Without hesitation, he rushed to the scene, pulled the unconscious driver to safety, and managed to avert a potential tragedy just moments before the vehicle exploded.
His actions not only saved a life but also showcased the critical role police officers play in emergency situations. After ensuring the driver received medical attention, Wakefield took charge of the scene, coordinating with other emergency services and managing road closures to facilitate their response.
Wakefield’s bravery has earned him a nomination for the Police Federation’s National Police Bravery award, with the winner to be announced on 9 July. He has also received multiple commendations, highlighting the importance of such acts of courage in policing.
